We are high schoolers from the Bronx at Riverdale Country School and self-proclaimed internet skeptics. Horizon was built to combat the rampant spread of fake news online. Anyone who uses social media platforms, especially Twitter or Instagram, has likely encountered countless “experts” confidently sharing opinions disguised as facts. Data is often misconstrued to support biased arguments, and incomplete studies are cited to mislead readers. Without thorough scrutiny, many people believe these claims simply because they appear official and convincing. This contributes to the spread of misinformation and creates confusion about what is true.

We are developing a tool to help news readers make better choices about what they read. Horizon is a chrome extension that interacts with news and media web pages by displaying a detailed opinion rating and analysis as well as providing alternate articles of similar topics. With Horizon, we aim to transform the internet from a chaotic “Wild West” into what it was meant to be—a space for truth and knowledge.
